Antony Kay

A defensive midfielder who started his career as a central defender and has now returned to that position for Town. He started his career at his home time club of Barnsley making his debut in a 1-0 home win over Norwich, although he only lasted 28 minutes before being substituted. He finally held down a starting berth in the side during the 2003/04 season and scored his first career goal in a 2-0 win at Chesterfield, in a game which he also got sent off. Kay played a key role in Barnsley’s promotion from League One in 2006, including scoring the winning penalty in the Play-Off Final win over Swansea City. After one year in the Championship he was released by Barnsley and signed for League One Tranmere Rovers. During this time at Prenton Park he moved to play central midfield and would go on to make over 80 appearances for them over the next two years. With his contract up he decided to join Town and became Lee Clark’s first summer signing when he joined on a 2 year deal.
