With just two weeks of the transfer window remaining, there hasn’t been much to dance about with regards news coming from the club. According to reports from the BBC, Sky Sports and other sources, bids for Chris Porter, Danny Graham and Swindon Town striker Simon Cox have all fallen flat; whereas Leeds United and Sheffield United are moving in for Liam Dickinson and Jamie Ward respectively, leaving less and less talent out there for Town to improve their squad with. BBC Sport reports that Town have bid £200,000 for Motherwell striker Chris Porter. Porter, who has scored 8 goals this season, stands at 6′ 1″ tall and would go straight into the first team for this weekends game against Swindon Town, if the deal is completed within the next 24 hours or so.

However, the report also suggests that Hearts are chasing Porter and the Tynecastle manager Csaba Laszlo has come out in admiration of the young forward.

More and more signs are pointing towards Birmingham City striker Kevin Phillips being offered a player-coach role at Town. Phillips is reported to be best friends with Lee Clark and is willing to take a severe pay cut to take the job and help push the club towards promotion to The Championship.

Somehow, this all seems too good to be true as many “nailed on” signings never come off for Town (Sidibe and Stead, anyone??) but it seems that the only thing to do at the moment is sit and wait for news from the club – because they have certainly been very tight-lipped so far!

Rumours suggest that Danny Graham is still in talks with Town as well as another club, believed to be Preston North End. Town’s bid is reported to be around the £320-350k mark, which is £100,000 more than the original declined bid last week. Graham’s goal in Carlisle’s 2-0 win against Leeds at the weekend will have done nothing to deter the unlooking scouts, so whether Town can persaude him to help the club’s promotion push is another matter.

townfan4ever claims that the Graham deal is done and dusted and set to be announced on Friday, whilst also suggesting that Town are looking at Rangers forward Alan Gow, who is willing to drop down to League One. Gow has just failed a medical at Wolves, but Sky Sports reports that both Blackpool (where Gow spent a 4 month loan spell until January 1st) and Leeds (currently managed by Simon Grayson, who brought Gow to Blackpool originally) are interested in the player.

Reports suggest that Town have had a £250,000 bid for Carlisle’s top scorer Danny Graham rejected by the Cumbrian club. Graham, who has scored 13 goals this season, including one against Town in the 3-0 Boxing Day defeat, would fit the bill perfectly up front and would bring with him a strong goalscoring record. Having started his career coming through the ranks at Middlesbrough, he was loaned out no less than 5 times to clubs including Leeds United and Derby County before finding his feet at Carlisle and signing for them in June 2007. Rumours circulating in the Yorkshire Post and Huddersfield Examiner suggest that Lee Clark will be turning to unsettled Bury striker Andy Bishop in his quest to ignite more firepower into Town’s attack. Despite recent effort from Phil Jevons, Keigan Parker and Danny Cadamarteri, Town’s strikeforce still can’t seem to find the net, with the club relying on its high-scoring midfield to maintain its strong recent form. Bishop has scored 11 goals so far this season for 8th-placed Bury, who lie just two points adrift of the play-offs in League Two. The striker stands at 6ft tall, so will be more likely to latch onto the quality crosses that Town’s wingers have been floating into the box lately, however whether he possesses the strength and presence required to hold up the ball is another question altogether. Not much to discuss with regards transfers at the moment, but many Town fans will be hoping that this is the calm before the storm of the January transfer window. The main weakness in the Town side has been pointed-out over and over, and that is of a consistent goalscorer up front. Phil Jevons has a good track record of providing goals, but for some reason it just hasn’t worked for him so far this season – not for the want of trying! Some names being banded around the forum such as Lee Hughes and Grant Holt. Read the rest of this entry »
