Andy Booth has announced that he will retire from football at the end of this season, however we’ll still be seeing his face around the club. Boothy will be staying on as Commercial Ambassador, acting as a front for the club out and about in the community.

Despite the rumours flying around, his retirement always seemed inevitable, with this being the Centenery season, and him struggling to maintain fitness for the full campaign.

Everyone at DATM wishes Boothy the best of luck in his new role, and hopes he knows that he will be sadly missed on the field!

After his two-goal salvo for Town on Saturday, more and more Town fans are joining the “one more year!” camp in support of home-grown legend Andy Booth.

Despite doubts over his long-term fitness, his experience and influence over the game are second-to-none in League One, and rumours are now circulating that he will be offered a new one-year deal by Lee Clark. The Town manager originally wanted Booth to stay on in a non-playing role, surprising considering the player’s insistence that he doesn’t want to work behind the scenes after retirement. However, this offer was rejected, leaving Clark no choice but to offer Booth another year’s extension.

According to The People, Newcastle United are now the favourites to sign Town keeper Alex Smithies for £3 million.

They report that Newcastle sent coach Colin Calderwood to watch Smithies in action in our 1-1 draw at MK Dons last Tuesday night. Smithies of course signed a new 4 year deal just a few weeks ago, a deal that could see Town coming into a lot of cash this Summer with the highley rated keeper being watched by the likes of Wigan, Spurs and Fulham.

Striker Matt Jansen has been training with Town this week and is set to feature in the reserve match at Rotherham tonight.

Jansen enjoyed the best spell of his career at Blackburn Rovers, where he scored 44 goals in 153 games, however has struggled to regain such form since a horrific motorcycle accident in 2002. Since then, he has spent time at Coventry City, Bolton Wanderers and then on trial with New York Red Bulls and Carlisle United, however has not been able to tie down a long-term deal.

The ex-England U’21 striker certainly has the potential to do the business at this level, and with Jonathan Tehoue’s registration causing more problems than expected, Town will be on the lookout for another striker to take on short-term.

Rumours suggest that Town have made a successful £750,000 bid for Bristol Rovers striker Rickie Lambert. The 6′ 2″ centre-forward has scored 18 league goals this season and reports are already circulating that it is a done deal.

This news comes after weeks and weeks of speculation and failed bids for other notable strikers, such as Danny Graham, Simon Cox and Chris Porter. However, considering Lambert’s playing style and scoring record, it would seem that he fits the bill perfectly for Town. The only worrying part is that he clearly was not Clark’s first choice, so may be regarded as a ‘panic buy’ by some fans.
