While there have been 40 league meetings between Town and the Latics and one cup tie each in the FA Cup and the League Cup, the first meetings occurred in 1920-21 when Town were promoted into Division 1. The teams met for three years but then did not meet in the league again until The Great Slide caused a third division match up in 1973/74. Since then there was a block of 5 years meetings in Division 2 starting in 1983/84 when Town returned to Division 2. Since then there have been two blocks of 2 season meetings. In 1995/96 and 1996/97 on Town’s last return to the new Division 1 we lost on the opening day at Boundary park 0-3 but earned a 0-0 home draw. Next season we earned the third ‘double’. At that time Town were on the up and the Latics on the way down. The next match up was near the end of the era of Mr. X. when Town gave two disgusting displays and lost 0-1 away and then, worse yet, 0-2 at home in Round 1 of the League Cup. This pathetic effort was followed up by the last 2 season series in 2001/02 both games ended up as draws 0-0 at home and 1-1 away. The following year will be long remembered because ‘Offside Clyde’ scored twice in the 0-4 away thumping. The home fixture on the last day of the season ended up 1-1 but Town was already doomed to relegation before the match began. The sides started meeting again in Div 3 in 2004/05 when the Latics followed Town down. We have met annually since. Read the rest of this entry »
